The internship program at MEDomicsTM offers practical experience and fosters specific scientific skills to promising students. Students have the opportunity to work with a team of experts in mutation analysis and diagnosis. The program includes a specific research topic which the student is expected to complete and present to the team at the completion of the term. Each week, the student will participate in educational seminars intended to foster the student’s critical thinking and innovative skills, while expanding his/her knowledge of molecular genetics.
Two types of positions are available:
1. 10-week summer internship
Internships are full-time. A stipend is available.
2. Volunteer internship position
MEDomicsTM has three volunteer internship slots available for motivated college students interested in Genetics and/or Marketing/Business Development. The internship involves a commitment of 10-20 hours per week.
The following internships are currently available to students:
Bioinformatics
MEDomicsTM offers students a first-hand involvement in the field of bioinformatics, a highly specialized field that is rapidly growing in demand. Student interns will have the opportunity to be involved in the analysis of DNA sequencing data generated from massively parallel sequencing technology.
Business Development
The MEDomicsTM strategy is to utilize the revolutionary “next-generation” genetic sequencing technology to provide patients with personalized, preventive medicine. Rotations in business development offer students the opportunity to be involved in a start-up company working in this exciting new era of genomics. The rotation in business development is intended for Masters of Business Administration (MBA) candidates.
Wet Laboratory
With use of next generation sequencing technology, MEDomicsTM is involved in cutting edge science. Students rotating within the MEDomicsTM laboratory have the unique opportunity for hands-on experience in a laboratory utilizing this technology.
Genetic Counseling
Genetic counseling was listed as one of the top 30 careers by the U.S. News & World Report Best Careers of 2009. Probably the fastest growing subspecialty of genetic counseling is that of the laboratory genetic counselor. A laboratory genetic counselor functions as a liaison between clinicians ordering genetic testing and the laboratory. The primary duties are to help interpret test results, contribute to the research of mutations identified in patient samples, and review test request forms for appropriateness based on the family and medical history. The genetic counseling rotation is intended for either students in Master’s-degree programs or undergraduates interested in pursuing a career in the field.
